CIAM opens Additive Technology Laboratory

CIAM opens Additive Technology Laboratory

On 30 October 2019, an Additive Technology Laboratory was launched at the Central Institute of Aviation Motors (CIAM, a part of the ‘Zhukovsky Institute’ National Research Center). Its focus became a powerful 3D Pro DMP X320 printer. The laboratory is equipped with all necessary equipment for research and development of advanced aircraft GTE designs from metal powder compositions.

Ready engineering solutions in the field of additive technology, developed and experimentally confirmed by CIAM specialists, will be introduced for implementation into the industry.

To gain experience in creating durable and efficient structures manufactured using additive methods, to conduct their qualification assessment and to form a knowledge base on the properties of product materials will allow two agreements signed by CIAM. The first one – for the use of the printer – was signed with NPO SYSTEM JSC (SIU System), the Russian representative office of the 3D Systems, and a leading integrator of 3D solutions in Russia and the CIS. The second agreement – for the delivery – was with Gazprombank Leasing JSC.

Before the official launch of the Laboratory, the agreements were signed by Mikhail Gordin, Director General of CIAM, Ashkhen Ovsepyan, Director General of NPO System, and Maksim Agadzhanov, Director General of Gazprombank Leasing.

“This is an important event,” Mikhail Gordin remarked. “Additive methods become one of the key manufacturing technologies that enable to create a competitive product. One of their main advantages is the speed of manufacturing complex parts, of which there are a lot in an aircraft engine. The opening of the 3D laboratory at CIAM is a step towards an integrated development and implementation of these technologies into the aviation industry.

The head of NPO System Ashkhen Ovsepyan agreed with him.

“Additive technology is a new stage in the development of modern production,” she said. “We are very pleased that by contributing a metal 3D printer to CIAM, we have contributed to the development of modern aircraft engines. And we are waiting for new projects where we can realize our experience and capabilities."

The topic was continued by the general director of Gazprombank Leasing Maksim Agadzhanov.

“The implementation of this project is an interesting experience for our company,” he said. “Today, financing of high-tech equipment on a finance lease basis takes less than one percent in the Russian market. However, with increased expertise in companies and increased requirements for the quality of products, high-tech equipment will be introduced at a faster pace, including through lease financing."
