CIAM’s Research and Test Center: 65 years in the service for aviation

1 December 2018
On November 16, 2018, the Research and Development Center (RDC) of the Central Institute of Aviation Motors (a subsidiary of the National Research Center ‘Zhukovsky Institute’) celebrated its 65-year anniversary. The anniversary was attended by the heads of leading aircraft industry companies and professionals, as well as municipal and regional deputies and members of the Public Chamber of the town of Lytkarino, where the Europe’s largest experimental facility is located.

High-altitude and high-speed flight conditions are simulated in the CIAM RDC. Aircraft engine testing at the desired flight altitude and speed allows to identify engine design specifics and drawbacks at the maturation stage, eliminating them in the future and achieving the necessary performance. It is experimental studies that allow to perfect the engine, making it reliable and efficient.

Through all these years, CIAM branch researchers have made indispensable contribution to the realization of the accumulated scientific experience and perfecting test methods. This is why the Center’s team was warmly congratulated and greeted by the participants.

The ceremony was opened by RDC Director, Deputy General Director of CIAM Sergey Astakhov.
Andrey Dutov, Director of the National Research Center ‘Zhukovsky Institute’, thanked the enterprise personnel for their work dedicated to the applied aviation science and drew the participants’ attention to the combined efforts aimed at its development, which in many ways determines industrial production support.

General Director of CIAM Mikhail Gordin reminded the guests about the Research and Development Center’s mission. He said that testing was the key to gaining scientific knowledge in the aeroengine industry. Engines are key components of the aircraft. Despite all the approaches taken today, digital economy and digital models, which can undoubtedly reduce the number of tests, research center potential is very important and will be strongly sought for in the future. “We are continuing to create opportunities to meet the industry and State demand. I am sure that the test facilities development and enhancement that obtained support at the State level will be completed with high quality,” — he pointed out concluding his speech.

President of the Aviation Engine Industry Union Association Viktor Chuyko emphasized the great importance of the colossal work for the development of several generations of competitive Russian aviation engines.

Head of the Lytkarino municipal district Yevgeny Seregin congratulated the employees of the town’s primary taxpayer on the anniversary and wished them interesting projects and the best aviation engines in the world.

On that day, testing engineers and other experts who have worked at the RDC for many decades felt like the persons of the moment. They were presented memorable gifts, badges of honor and certificates of merit for their continuing dedicated work.

Throughout the RDC history, entire generations of engines passed testing at the Center’s facilities. The enterprise continues to grow its research and production potential, while highly skilled professionals are continually upgrading their qualifications. All this enables the experimental facility to stay at the forefront of relevant scientific research activities, generate new ideas and implement new technologies.

Today, the CIAM’s RDC provides support for the development of all types of future aeroengines, moving towards the main goal: working for the future.
